2024 Guangxi S3: Ethan Vernon Claims Thrilling Victory in 214km Sprint

The 2024 Gree-Guangxi World Tour Cycling Race delivered an exhilarating showdown in its third stage, a demanding 214 kilometers long. In a nail-biting finish, Ethan Vernon from the Israel Premier Tech team narrowly secured the victory.

Stage Overview

Starting in the scenic Jingxi County and ending in Bama Yao Autonomous County, this stage featured two intermediate sprints and several challenging climbs. With a total elevation gain nearing 2000 meters, it was the longest and toughest segment of the competition.

Race Highlights

The race kicked off at 9:40 AM, attended by numerous dignitaries. Jingxi, at the crossroads of Yunnan, Guizhou, and Guangxi provinces, is rich in culture and history. Early in the race, a crash involving several riders, including overall leader Max Kanter, prompted a brief halt for safety, leading to the cancellation of the first intermediate sprint point.

As the race unfolded, breakaway groups formed, with Dries De Bondt and Pepijn Reinderink making significant gains. However, their lead dwindled as the main pack accelerated, catching them just 5 kilometers from the finish line.

Final Moments

In the final 2 kilometers, the sprint dynamic shifted. Juan Sebastián Molano from UAE Team Emirates launched an early attack, but Vernon, shielded by teammates, surged forward. In a dramatic last 50 meters, Vernon edged out Molano to clinch the stage victory.

Post-Race Reflections

Following his triumph, Vernon donned the red jersey for the overall lead and the blue jersey for the points classification, while also being recognized as the best young rider with the white jersey. Dries De Bondt retained the polka dot jersey for climbing, and Pepijn Reinderink received the combativity award.

Looking Ahead

The fourth stage, spanning 176.8 kilometers from Bama to Jinchengjiang, promises more excitement. With its undulating terrain and multiple sprint and climb points, the competition is set to heat up.

The event has showcased the riders' determination and skill, and we eagerly anticipate the thrilling moments yet to come!
