2025 Vuelta a España Stage 1 - Saturday 23 August - won by Jasper Philipsen
It all came down to a bunch sprint on the first day of La Vuelta 2025, won by Jasper Philipsen. The Belgian takes the overall lead of the race with the stage victory, and will wear the red jersey into day two. He also won the opening stage at the Tour de France earlier in the European summer.
Race Route: The race covers a total of 186.1 kilometers, starting in Turin and heading toward Novara. Along the way, there’s one Category 3 climb and a sprint point. Early on, some riders will likely try to break away for a long-distance escape, aiming to grab points for the sprint and climbing competitions. The peloton is expected to reel them back in with about 10-20 kilometers left to go. As they approach the finish, expect a fierce sprint battle from all the teams.
Stage 1:Saturday, August 23: Turin (Palazzo Venaria) → Novara, 183 km
The main bunch has been relatively calm, but the breakaway group has been full of action. Riders have launched multiple solo attacks, each time trying their luck. After grabbing points for the climbs and sprints, they gradually drifted back into the main peloton.
As large groups entered the Novara urban area, the originally leading Visma team was replaced by the Obeikan and Trek teams. Both teams aimed to secure their first victory, but subsequently, the Obeikan team firmly controlled the situation, while the Trek team's sprint train formation was disrupted, forcing their leader Pedersen to fight alone.
With 300 meters to go, Philipson, under the protection of his teammates, rode away effortlessly to win his first victory. After the race, he will wear the red and green jerseys.
Event results. After the race, Philipsen won the red jersey and green jersey, Voeckler won the polka dot jersey, and Froom won the white jersey. The Vuelta a España S2 (Alba-Piedmont Mountains) will take place on August 24, stay tuned.
